Preparing for and Celebrating the Birth of Jesus

I can hardly believe tomorrow will be December 1st, and another year has come and gone so quickly! Last year I shared with my readers how our family goes about Preparing for and Celebrating the Birth of Jesus. I am going to share last years posts with you again this year. Enjoy!
The-shepherd-king__red
December begins the month of celebrating the birth of my Savior Jesus Christ. There are many out there who choose not to celebrate some who are not Christians and even those who are Christians. Sure, Jesus may not have been born on December 25, but December 25,  is the day which has been set aside to remember Jesus and his miraculous birth. Therefore, my family has decided to celebrate on this day because such a miraculous and glorious birth needs to be celebrated. For if my Savior had not been born on that day, I would still be bound in chains of my sins and not have the hope and promise of life eternal. Although the world's acknowledgment of the Messiah's birth is nearly choked out by the commercialism of the season, we as Christians desire to use whatever means we can to redeem the time.
Our thoughts are that the best way to accomplish this is to celebrate in a distinctive way, one that helps our children to focus on this wondrous act of God. Now you know we celebrate Christmas, but a greater fact for you to know is HOW we celebrate Christmas! The beauty of America is we are FREE to celebrate and worship the way we choose as long as we are not harming or infringing the freedoms of anyone else. These are just ideas of how we celebrate Christmas. I encourage you to seek out your own family ways to celebrate the wonderful birth of Jesus!

  • We DO NOT promote Santa Claus! Yes, you heard me correctly, our children are not told that Santa brings them presents! I made the decision when I was 7 or 8 years old and first found out my parents were giving the gifts and NOT Santa Claus! I was crushed when I first learned the truth! In fact, when I confronted my mom (who is a Christian!) about it and asked why she lied to my brothers and me, she was in tears! I had been told NOT to lie or be deceitful and was trying very hard with all my might not to lie or be deceitful! My parents did not like lies, and I was punished IF I lied. You can imagine how a little child feels once he/she has placed their trust in someone just to find out they lied! I was upset with my parents for a while! To this day, my dad still claims Santa comes! It can be a fun game, but I decided the day I learned the truth, I would NEVER lie to my children about Santa! My husband who was homeschooled and raised in a Christian family did not celebrate Santa Claus! I was so happy of that fact because I knew in my heart I did not want to deceive my children either! So, WHAT do we tell our children about Santa Claus? First, we let them know that EVERY GOOD AND PERFECT GIFT COMES FROM GOD! Secondly, we read a story book called Santa Are You for Real which explains who Saint Nicholas was and the history behind Santa Claus. We also let them know that the best gift of all was God sending his son to die for us!
  • Our Christmas decorations are centered around Christ. We have Nativity Scenes, holly, poinsettias, etc. Yes, we do put up a tree. The tree is simply decorated with a Star at the top signifying the star the wise men followed on their journey to find the Christ Child. The tree itself is a symbol of the cross on which Jesus was crucified, the lights are a symbol of Jesus who is the light of the world, and the evergreen tree is a symbol of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
  • Jesse Tree or Advent is also something we do in our home. We start from Creation and go through the bible each day of December leading to the day we celebrate Christmas. We have a daily devotional and have an ornament to represent each story. My goal is to post a weeks worth of devotions for you to use in your home. I will have a separate post each week with ideas for you to have devotions with your children. We use them as part of school each day!
  • We make Christmas cookies which is a family tradition from my husband. One set of cookies we make are called Swiss Christmas Cookies (my children call them paint cookies). They are cut out cookies which are in shapes which represent symbols of Christmas. The shapes include baby Jesus in the manger, Mary, Joseph, Wise Men (who did not find Jesus until he was a small child), Shepherds, angels, stars, etc. We will be making these cookies this week. I will share the recipe and pictures at that time. We send these cookies to family members and friends as well as hand deliver them to neighbors, widows, widowers, nursing homes, and others who may not have any one to celebrate Christmas. My children usually will sing at least one song. I think Timmy will play one or two on his violin this year as well!
  • We DO exchange gifts, but we do not spend a lot of money. Each child usually gets three things as well as a treat bag full of goodies to eat. I usually make at least one of their gifts. We put the emphasis on Jesus and giving, not on receiving. My children LOVE to bless others. Of course, they love to get gifts as well, but they are much happier on the giving end! I usually take the older ones to Dollar Tree (makes it easy since everything is one price!) and let them buy things for their brothers and sisters as well as Daddy or anyone else they want. They use their own money they have saved for Christmas, and we usually put in a few dollars as well. They have so much fun buying and wrapping and doing things for others!
  • We read the Christmas story on Christmas Eve as well as have a special Christmas Eve party. We also read the Christmas story on Christmas Day BEFORE any gifts are opened. This year my children want to do a live Nativity for extended family and friends when we get together to celebrate. We will see what happens.
  • We sing carols and play Christmas music all of December in our home. We also sing on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Michaela sings Silent Night wile doing motions which I learned as a child. Timmy plays several songs on his violin. Michaela will be playing some songs on the piano this year as well.
These are just a few of the things we do to keep our focus on Jesus throughout the Christmas Season! I know this subject can be contradictory, but I hope you will be blessed and have a wonderful Christmas with your friends and family! Stay tuned for posts on Jesse Tree devotions!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Cedar Springs Christian Stores Cyber Monday Specials

I am NOT a Black Friday shopper, but I do enjoy getting a few good deals from the Cyber Monday Specials. In addition, I do want to support local businesses as well as encourage you to do the same! Many local businesses in the Knoxville area as well as other areas have been hit hard due to the economy, Amazon, Kendall, and itunes. Cedar Springs Christian Stores is no exception! In fact, they had to lay off all of the seasonal help they hired and trained because they are not selling enough to pay them.  She said that she does not know how they will be able to continue to pay for their building in January. My friend shared this information with me and another group of Christian women after she talked to a daughter of one of the original owners of Cedar Springs.

I was shocked at this information,a nd asked for permission to make the information public! Cedar Springs has been around ever since I can remember! If you are in the Knoxville area PLEASE support Cedar Springs Christian Stores as well as other LOCAL businesses in the area! You do not have to even go to the store! They have a website where you can purchase their items in the convenience of your own home!

Below are some of their specials for Cyber Monday! You can also see all of the Cyber Monday deals from Cedar Springs Christian Stores here. Just click on each topic area for more savings. Be sure to sign-up for the $5 in-store coupon as well as get on their mailing list  and email list (check right side bar) to receive their sales paper and additional coupons each month!

REG. $15.99
ONLY $1.99

REG. $28.99
ONLY $10.99

More Information:

Someone asked why they could spend more money at Cedar Springs when they could get the items cheaper at Amazon. A son of one of the original owners answered this question in one word “pornography.” After looking into it, one of their customers found that Amazon not only sells soft pornography, but they also sell hard pornography. I have not checked into this information myself, but knowing they sale a variety of music and videos as well as other items, I am not surprised.

One of the best things we can do is pray for Cedar Springs as they have been a shining light in the Knoxville area for the past 34 years! Please consider shopping locally this Christmas as well as encouraging others to do the same! The daughter said that online purchasing is having a huge impact on many local businesses, and she has many friends who owned Christian bookstores who have had to go out of business! Christ is the reason for the season! The local Christian bookstores allow us to keep Christ in Christmas! Please support your local businesses this Christmas season!
Thank you for taking time to read and pass the info along!

Wednesday Words of Wisdom- Thankfulness (Part 2 of 2)

Last week I talked about what it means to be thankful and gave you the responses I had from my children. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. Do you know why we celebrate Thanksgiving? Do you know for what or who you are thankful this year?

Thankfulness is more than just being happy about what others do for you or have done for you.  Thankfulness is being aware and appreciative of the things we have in our life as well as those who have helped us. Thankfulness is expressing our gratitude in a way where others will know we are thankful! Thankfulness includes God’s mercy and love for us. God provides all of our needs and protect those who are HIS. He loves us. I have so many things and people for which I am thankful, if I began to list them, I would never be able to quit writing this post.

There is a local morning radio personality on the News Talk radio station who suggests starting your day with gratitude. He says to start your day with three things for which you are thankful. Being thankful everyday instead of Thanksgiving only will really make a difference in your life!

Thanksgiving was first celebrated by the Pilgrims after a long battle of sickness, starvation, and death. The Indians taught them how to raise vegetables and survive in their new world. The Pilgrims were thankful for surviving and for those who helped them. They also acknowledged without God, none of them would have made it as far as they did.

Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving as a National Holiday in October of 1863. He did it partially to help soothe the national mood, which was weary of the Civil War. He declared Thanksgiving again for November 23, 1864. In 1865, his successor, Andrew Johnson, declared a Thanksgiving for December 7, 1865, and presidents traditionally declared a Thanksgiving for every autumn since. Andrew Johnson was the first to give government employees the day off, making it a legal holiday.
In 1941, Congress passed a bill, and FDR signed it, that fixed the date as the fourth Thursday in November. FDR attempted to move the holiday to the third Thursday in November, but Congress enacted a law to fix the date at the fourth Thursday in November, thus making it an "official" holiday. On November 26, 1941, FDR signed the bill.

Be thankful today, tomorrow, and everyday for God’s many blessings in your life!

Getting Fit after Having a Baby

I have now birthed seven children! I am often amazed when I think I have had seven precious blessings living inside me! Unfortunately, I am not the size three I was when my husband and I first married, nor do I expect to be that size again! I was twenty at the birth of my first child! Ten years later and seven babies later, my body is much different!  I am going to start a new series of posts entitled “Getting Fit after Having a Baby.” While I am not an expert on fitness or dieting, I feel I do have enough experience to share my experiences with my readers. All of these posts are based on my experience and research. I encourage you to consult your doctor and do your own research before beginning any exercise routine!

Topic One: When should I or can I start exercising after I have my baby?

This question is a difficult question to answer. It all depends on your body, what type of birth you had, whether or not you are nursing, and your fitness level pre and during pregnancy.

There are some exercises which can be started within 24 hours after birth. The main exercises are Kegels! Yes, the dreaded Kegels! You can refer to this article for more information on performing Kegels. You can also begin crunches at ten days or so post partum. You should start with no more than ten per day and gradually build them up over the weeks. Crunches will help your separated help abdominal muscles to come back together. There is an article from Pregnancy Info on Checking for Separated Muscles.

For those women who had a natural childbirth with no complications, I suggest beginning a regular exercise routine between 4-6 weeks postpartum. You can start with one or two days a week and gradually work up to three to five days a week. If you are a nursing mother, make sure you are still eating enough to keep up with milk production for the baby. You also want to stay hydrated; therefore, drink LOTS of water and other healthy fluids. You should also make sure you are still getting plenty of rest. Exercising and nursing and lack of rest, will do more damage than good to both you and your baby. I have had a few breast infections from over exercising and not resting enough! Your goal is not to lose weight, it is to be fit! There is a difference! The weight loss will come, do not worry! :)

If you have had complications with your pregnancy and labor and delivery and/or had a c-section, take your time for exercising. Consult your doctor or midwife as to when you can start a fitness routine again.

No matter what type of birth you had, you should still listen to your body and your baby! If you are too tired to go on, then stop and rest! If your nursing baby is suddenly fussy after being content or seems to be losing instead of gaining, you may not have enough milk. Make sure you are taking your vitamins, eating enough (at least 2500 calories!), and drinking plenty of water.

Next Topic in this Series: What is an acceptable beginning exercise routine?

Wednesday Words of Wisdom-Thankfulness (Part 1 of 2)

With Thanksgiving next week, I am devoting my Wednesday Words of Wisdom to Thankfulness for the next two weeks.

What does it mean to be thankful? I asked my children to define thankfulness  in our school lesson for Tuesday, and tell me something for which they are thankful. Below are the responses from each of the five oldest children. I also asked them separately so their answers would be unique to the individual. Sometimes little ones like to say the same things as the older ones! :)

Boy Age 9- Thankfulness….Well, it is being thankful. It is appreciating what others do for you. It is being happy to have things and be where you are. I am thankful God saved me. I am also thankful for my mommy and daddy and my brothers and sisters. I love my dog and my guns too!

Girl Age 8- Thankfulness is loving what you have and not complaining. It is giving to others who are less fortunate and helping them to be thankful. I am thankful to have a family who loves me. I am thankful for my brothers and sisters and all of my friends.

Boy Age 6 1/2- Thankfulness is being thankful and what we celebrate on Thanksgiving. The pilgrims and Indians were thankful for turkey and for deer and for not dying in the cold winter. I hope we do not die in the cold winter either. I am thankful God loves me.

Boy Age 5- Thankfulness…what do you think it is Momma? (I responded I was asking him). Thankfulness is praying for your food before you eat it. It is giving food to others when they are hungry. You should always be polite and say please and thank you. I am thankful for food. I love to eat all day. I am glad God made food!

Girl Age 3 1/2- I am thankful for my mommy and my daddy. I like saying thank you when someone gives me candy. I like to be thankful and nice to people.

A received a variety of answers. I did not tell them ahead of time what I was going to ask them. They really got me to thinking about thankfulness. What does thankfulness mean to me? What does thankfulness mean to you?

I will share more on my thoughts of Thankfulness next week. Feel free to comment and share what it means to you as well as the things for which you are thankful.

Online Holiday Shopping Guide via Knoxville On a Dime

As I mentioned before, a group of us local Knoxville Bloggers decided to have a series on different Holiday tips to help our readers through the Christmas season. It is in a way a Christmas Helper Carnival. You will be seeing a series of posts from Blue Frog Creations, Coupon Katie, Coupon Mommie, Couponing in Critical Times, Coupons Are Money, Frugalisa Finds, Frugally Farming Family, Knoxmoms.com, Knoxville Mamabelle, Knoxville on a Dime, and Sharing Savings with You .

Today’s post is from Kathryn at Knoxville On a Dime. She is sharing her Tips for Online Holiday Shopping. My favorite tip is to make a list and make a budget. “This really needs to be a written(or typed) list, not just a mental note.” Writing things down will help you remember and not forget the most important people for which you want to shop! Since we homeschool, I have my children write their lists (both what they want and who they want to shop for) as part of a handwriting/reading/grammar/spelling/math assignment.

I hope you enjoy Kathryn’s post as well as all the posts to come. Some of the topics you will see include:

  • Black Friday
  • Online Holiday Shopping Tips
  • Things to do around Knoxville for the Christmas Season
  • Children’s books for the holidays and library activities and resources
  • Giveaway Bash
  • Organic/Local Christmas Feast (my topic)
  • Volunteering with your children
  • Homemade crafts and traditions
  • budgeting gifts and other Christmas expenses

Product Review: United States Trivia Pack

I recently reviewed a United States Trivia Pack from Python Printables. This United States Trivia Pack as a great asset to our homeschool this year as we are studying the history of the United States and each individual state.

Our favorite part was quizzing each other and seeing who knew the most about each state. These trivia questions will also make great reviews or tests for reinforcing what you are teaching in regards to United States History. We absolutely loved these printables for each state! They are a fun way to learn a lot of facts in a short amount of time. We will use these trivia questions for years to come.

There are Trivia questions for all 50 states. There are 15 questions per state. The entire pack is $19.95 to download. Once you pay, you will receive an email with a link to download your United States Trivia Pack.

Python Printables also offers FREE printables where they give away coloring pages and trivia games.

[Product review & giveaway disclosure: I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commissions 16 CFR, Part 255 "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising."]

Product Review: Prntable Thanksgiving Games

Homeschooling with Little Ones

As a mother of seven children ages 9 years down to three months, I am often asked, “How do you homeschool so many? What do you do with the little ones?”

A great question! I will be honest and answer, “Sometimes I wonder the same thing myself!” :)

Anyway, we do get school accomplished each day (eventually), but there are a few things I have learned over the years.

  • Chill out…. You will seldom finish everything on your to do list each day! Concentrate on the moment at hand and take advantage of each moment to school where there are no interruptions. Believe me, there will be interruptions!
  • Involve the little ones. My two year old LOVES to color and to sit on my lap while I read to the others. He also will “read” his books a loud too when the older ones are taking turns reading.
  • Do as many things as you can together. For instance, this year I am teaching four different grades of math, plus preschool if you count the things I do with the three and two year olds. Math is almost always separate even though the younger ones are around listening to what the others are doing when we have our lessons orally. We can most of the time have history, science, reading, Bible/Character lessons, and P.E. together. Each child plays a different instrument on a different level, so music is separate too.
  • Take breaks if you need them. Go for a walk or stand up and have the children perform jump and jacks or stretches.
  • Include fun filled songs and stories which are suitable for all ages. We often read bible stories and sing songs which go along with them.
  • Have other games or toys for the little ones while you are working with the older children.
  • Save more complex studies which need more one on one time for when the babies are asleep. You may have days when the babies do not sleep. Do not fret, you can always finish the task tomorrow. Do something easier such as a review or a fun game to supplement the concept at hand.
  • If the day is really overwhelming (whiny or sick children, lots of interruptions, etc.) just take a stack of books and cuddle up on the couch and read. Ask questions as you read. Let the children read to you. You are still having school, and it is usually much more enjoyable!
  • Remember to let the older ones and even the younger ones help in the kitchen when it is time to fix lunch! Oh, the math they will learn while cooking! My children are learning fractions and multiplication and division without even realizing it!
  • Just remember to love and enjoy the children. You are going to have good days and bad days. As I said before, do not worry if you do not accomplish everything you set out to do! It will be okay, and there is always tomorrow to try again!

Homeschooling should be a wondrous and enjoyable time with your children. It should not be a burden or a dread. If you are dreading each day, re-think your curriculum. It is perfectly OK to start over!

Thanks to Court Yard Grille!

Last Tuesday, some blogging buddies ( Coupon Mommie, Couponing in Critical Times, Coupons Are Money, Frugalissa Finds, Knoxmoms.comKnoxville Mamabelle, and  Knoxville on a Dime) and I had a meeting at Courtyard Grille. They allowed us to use their meeting room at no charge! Thank you!

I had never been to Courtyard Grille before this visit. I had the broiled Grouper and Spinach Maria. Many of the ladies ordered appetizers which included chips and queso dip, cheese sticks, and chicken bites. There was also bread and butter served. I did not eat any of the appetizers or the bread as I was trying to avoid the gluten. Unfortunately, for someone who is on a gluten free diet, this restaurant is not very suitable to visit as almost everything has some type of wheat/gluten in it. However, the food I ate was delicious and reasonably priced. They also have a children’s menu and give them coloring pages while waiting on the food. The service was great too. The waitress worked hard and was courteous.

There are also some coupons available.  The Blount County School Coupon Book has a $5/$25 purchase coupon. There is also a printable coupon on the East TN Rewards site for a free appetizer with the purchase of two entrees after 4pm.

Courtyard Grille also offers catering. You can see their full menu on their website and get more information about hours and location.

Christmas Favorites from Shutterfly

I have been using Shutterfly for several years. They offer lots of great ways to personalize your pictures for every occasion! I thought I would share a few of my favorite items from Shutterfly.

Christmas cards- Christmas cards are easy with Shutterfly. Just download your pictures to their site, chose a design for your card, as well as a greeting, and you are all set! Each set of cards comes with envelopes. You can even order mailing labels to make your Christmas card sending even easier! I do not know about you, but with a large family on both sides as well as lots of friends, I can use all the help I can get to make my card sending as easy as possible!

Birthday Invitations- I have not used the birthday invitations at this point, but I have relatives who have. What an awesome way to celebrate a party by sending a picture of the birthday boy or girl to each invited guest. It is definitely an invitation worth keeping.

Calendars- Last but not least and my ALL TIME PERSONAL FAVORITE! You can have a picture for each month or even a picture for each day! These are perfect gifts for Grandparents, Aunts, and Uncles. Also a nice gift for the spouse who works outside the home to have at his/her desk! You can not go wrong with calendars!

This year I plan to use the Flat Photo Cards for my Christmas Cards to friends and relatives. the Flat Photo Cards are a quick and easy way to send Christmas Greetings from a large family! My particular favorite is the Picture Tree! Using the picture tree, I can have a picture of each child and one picture of the entire family all on one card! It measures 4x8 inches and comes in Matte or Glossy Finish. Right now you can get free shipping on orders over $30 with the promo code SHIP30. Black Friday Tips Via Frugalissa Finds

Photobucket

Last week, a group of us local Knoxville Bloggers decided to have a series on different Holiday tips to help our readers through the Christmas season.

Today the tips are from Melissa at Frugalissa Finds. She is sharing her Black Friday Tips for shopping. My favorite tip is to stay at home and shop the online deals on Black Friday or the deals on Cyber Monday.

I hope you enjoy Melissa’s post as well as all the posts to come. Some of the topics you will see include:

  • Black Friday
  • Online Shopping/Cyber Monday
  • Things to do around Knoxville for the Christmas Season
  • Children’s books for the holidays and library activities and resources
  • Giveaway Bash
  • Organic/Local Christmas Feast (my topic)
  • Volunteering with your children
  • Homemade crafts and traditions
  • budgeting gifts and other Christmas expenses
  • Donating your freebies to a worthy cause

If there are any other topics which do not seem to be covered which you would like to know more about, please let me know! I will try to answer or pass the question among the group to find your answer!

Welcome Knoxville News Sentinel Readers!

Welcome to all of the Knoxville News Sentinel Readers as well as all of my regulars! Today, there is an article in the Knoxville News Sentinel titled “East Tennnessee money-saving momma bloggers share tips” written by Margaret Slattery who is also a local Knoxville Mom Blogger. The article highlights several of us mom bloggers and each specialty.

There was one error regarding our monthly visitor numbers. Margaret asked us our “unique monthly visitor” numbers and what was published was our “monthly traffic” numbers. The numbers should be much higher for everyone regarding traffic.

Many thanks to Margaret for her hard work in getting this article (her first for the News Sentinel) published!

Many thanks to you, the readers, for reading my blog and the blogs of the other East Tennessee Money Saving Momma Bloggers!
